The Drive

Everybody has different things that motivate and fuel the fires within. For me the legends of the sporting world keep me moving forwards not only within triathlon but all sports generally. Below are a few of my favourite quotes to hopefully motivate and inspire you…

"A rooster crows only when it sees the light. Put him in the dark and he'll never crow. I have seen the light and I'm crowing."
Muhammad Ali

"Perhaps the single most important element in mastering the techniques and tactics of racing is experience. But once you have the fundamentals, acquiring the experience is a matter of time."
Greg LeMond

"The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses—behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights."
Muhammad Ali

"Pain is a big fat creature riding on your back. The farther you pedal, the heavier he feels. The harder you push, the tighter he squeezes your chest. The steeper the climb, the deeper he digs his jagged, sharp claws into your muscles."
Scott Martin

"Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: A desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill."
Muhammad Ali

"To boast of a performance which I cannot beat is merely stupid vanity. And if I can beat it that means there is nothing special about it. What has passed is already finished with. What I find more interesting is what is still to come."
Emil Zatopek

"If one can stick to the training throughout the many long years, then will power is no longer a problem. It's raining? That doesn't matter. I am tired? That's besides the point. It's simply that I just have to."
Emil Zatopek

"If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon."
Emil Zatopek

"A runner must run with dreams in his heart, not money in his pocket."
Emil Zatopek

“Just as well!”
James Parker
